Katrina’s thoughts.
According to Katrina, discussions at her station about mental health are more of an add on. If you feel like you're struggling the only thing you can do is stick your hand up, which is difficult when you don't know if the environment you're in will support you.
"Nobody really asks, 'are you ok?', you get told you have to look after yourself, but there's never really a checkup."
She says that after a large fire there is usually a debrief for everyone involved, however mental health is never really mentioned.
"Mental health is more of an add on, if you want to speak up, you need to know where to go."
A few times a year the fire brigades bring out people to talk to firefighters. The most recent being a union rep, an expert on new virtual reality training, and a specialist on new fire extinguishers. However, in her time as a fire fighter, there has not been one expert who has spoken about mental health.
She believes that websites like this are needed, because although there is a lot of information out there about supporting others and the health of firefighters, there is no singular place to find help.
